ORGANIC INDIGO & RESIST DYEING WORKSHOP

The mysterious blue dye - In this class you will learn how to make, use and maintain an Organic Indigo Vat based on Fruit sugar/Fruit fermentation. We will explore and talk about other Indigo Vats and learn how to use resists and make a resist paste for fabrics. Materials are provided and we will dye a silk scarf and fabrics on the day for you to take home.

This workshop is only suitable for Silk and  plant fibres ie. Cotton, Linen, Hemp 

This is a great workshop for hobby dyers and Beginners alike. No experience is necessary.

The day in detail:

A short history and introduction to Blue Dyeing ~ Which plants will dye blue, Woad versus Indigo, when and how was Blue first used, Origins

Creating an Organic Indigo Vat ~ learn how to create an Organic Indigo Vat using Fruit Sugar. We will also create an Iron Vat for comparison and how to keep them alive.

Learning to make and create with a resist paste ~  learning how to make a resist paste and applying it to your fabric. 

Dyeing with an Indigo Vat ~ Learning all about the practices on how to dye with Indigo, what Vat is suitable for what and proper finishing practices.

Trouble shooting Indigo Vats ~ learn about how to fix and handle an unwell Indigo Vat.

All materials are provided on the day. If you like to bring a small item, like a t-shirt or napkins, that is fine. All fabrics can be taken home. You will also receive the material we covered in writing on the day, as well as recipes by pdf after the workshop!

To bring: An old apron and sturdy footwear (wellies or walking boots), lunch and a mug for tea or coffee. Coffee, tea and herbal teas are provided.

  • Classes are of 8 participants (Class will go ahead with a minimum of 5 participants)
  • Please do not come, if you are unwell, we can organize a 75% refund.
  • Mask wearing is optional

  • The shop will be open on the day after the workshop.
