The Fabric
Habotai, also known as Pongé, is a fine, lightweight silk fabric appreciated for its smooth texture, softness and fluid movement.
At just 20 g/m², this Pongé 5 is exceptionally light and transparent, making it ideal for delicate layers, flowing scarves and textile applications where softness and movement are essential.
The natural white colour provides a beautiful starting point for dyeing and painting, allowing the silk's subtle sheen to complement the colours applied.
Despite its delicate appearance, silk is a remarkably versatile natural protein fibre.
What does Pongé 5 mean?
The number 5 refers to the silk's traditional weight classification, measured in momme. Pongé 5 is an exceptionally lightweight, sheer silk, particularly well suited to silk painting, natural dyeing, nuno felting and delicate flowing textiles.
Natural Dyeing & Textile Art
Silk is one of the most rewarding fibres to work with in natural dyeing. Its protein structure has a natural affinity for many botanical dyes, allowing beautiful colours to develop when properly prepared and mordanted.
This lightweight Habotai is particularly suitable for:
-
Natural dyeing: Botanical dyes, indigo and experimental colour work
-
Silk painting: Hand-painted scarves, artwork and surface design
-
Nuno felting: Incorporating fine silk into felted wool textiles
-
Textile art: Layering, embroidery, mixed media and creative explorations
Its transparent quality is especially lovely for combining colour, texture and light in layered textile work.

Care Instructions
Handwash gently at a maximum of 30°C using a detergent suitable for silk.
Avoid vigorous rubbing, twisting and wringing. Dry away from direct heat and strong sunlight.
Although the fabric has been prewashed, allow for approximately 3–5% residual shrinkage. We recommend washing before cutting or sewing.
For natural dyeing and silk painting, prepare the fabric according to your chosen technique and test before working on larger pieces.
