Ramie Roving

Strong Natural Fibre from the Nettle Family

Ramie is a beautiful plant fibre derived from the ramie nettle (Boehmeria nivea), a traditional textile plant used for thousands of years in Asia.

The fibre is naturally white with a silky lustre and shares many characteristics with flax/linen. Ramie fibres are extremely strong, highly absorbent and take dye beautifully.

Compared with flax, ramie is slightly coarser but ramie fibres are naturally very long and strong. After processing into roving the staple length is typically around 6–15 cm, making it suitable for spinning and fibre blending.

Ramie can also be used in fibre art and textile projects such as doll hair or decorative fibre work.

Tussah Silk Roving

Natural Tussah silk roving with a softly textured character and gentle natural sheen. Tussah silk is a wild silk fibre produced by oak-feeding silk moths, whose cocoons yield the naturally warm honey and ivory tones typical of this fibre.

Unlike mulberry silk, Tussah cocoons are often collected only after the moth has naturally emerged. Because of this, the silk is frequently referred to as “vegetarian silk.” The emergence of the moth breaks the continuous filament, resulting in a shorter staple fibre that is spun or prepared as roving.

Tussah silk is slightly less smooth and glossy than mulberry silk, but it brings beautiful character, warmth and natural sheen to yarns and fibre blends. The fibre is also lighter and fluffier to the touch, making it very pleasant to spin and blend.

About Combed Top

Combed top is a smooth, long-fibre preparation. The raw wool is first carded to loosen and align the fibres while removing impurities. The fibre strands are then drawn through a fine comb to remove short fibres, resulting in long, parallel fibres with a smooth, lustrous finish.

This preparation gives strength, shine, and clarity to both spun yarn and felted surfaces.

About Micron

Fibre fineness is measured in microns (µm), referring to the diameter of each fibre. The lower the number, the finer and softer the wool. At 31 microns, Wensleydale is coarser and more structural, making it ideal for texture and translucent effects rather than next-to-skin garments.

Superfine Alpaca Fibre

This superfine alpaca fibre from Peru has been carefully combed so that only the softest fibres remain. Coarser guard hairs have been removed, leaving a luxurious fibre that drafts smoothly and produces wonderfully soft yarn.

Alpaca fibre is known for its lightweight warmth and silky softness. The fibres are naturally hollow, which gives spun yarn excellent insulation while remaining light and comfortable.

The fibre is offered in a range of natural alpaca colours, from light cream and fawn tones to warm browns and deep natural shades.

This super soft, long-haired Alpaca top, carded into a band, is great for spinning and felting. All hairy fibres have been removed and only the very soft fibres remain.

Alpaca fibre is wonderful for felting projects, because it is so soft with less of the “tickle factor” of sheep wool. The fibres are hollow, which gives the yarn an amazingly warm and light finish. Alpaca fibre is also preferred by people, who react allergic to sheep wool, due to no Lanolin present. That, however, isn't always the case and some, especially people with dry skin, will still react to alpaca or any animal fibre.
