Madder is a renowned natural dye that produces a beautiful range of colours, from warm oranges and soft peaches to rich brick reds, deep reds and fiery crimson tones. The final shade depends on several factors, including the origin and age of the roots, growing conditions, water chemistry, dyeing temperature and fibre-to-dye ratio.

Cut or ground?

Cut madder consists of small pieces of dried root. These are easier to strain from the dye bath and benefit from soaking overnight before extraction. A brief boiling-water rinse can help remove some of the yellow flavonoid colour, which may result in clearer reds. Discard the rinse water before preparing the dye bath.

Ground madder is finely ground root and tends to give stronger colours, but it also produces more sediment. A fine straining cloth or dye bag can help keep most particles away from your fibres, although some may still pass through. You can also leave the material in the bath for contact dyeing.

Both forms are whole-root dye materials rather than concentrated extracts.

Colour & results

Madder’s colour depends on the origin of the roots, including harvesting time and growing conditions, as well as your fibre, mordant, water chemistry, dyeing temperature and the amount of dye used. Oranges rather than reds are often the more likely result, particularly when working with unfamiliar water or a lower dye concentration.

If you are aiming for reds, pay attention to your water. Calcium-rich water can help develop red tones; if your water is soft, calcium carbonate—also called chalk—may be added to the dye bath.

Colourfastness: Madder is known for producing durable, lasting colours when suitable mordanting and dyeing methods are used. Lightfastness and washfastness depend on the fibre, mordant, shade and process.

How much do I need?

For an initial trial, use 50–100% of the weight of dry fibre (WOF).

For 100 g of dry fibre, use 50–100 g of dried madder root. Lower quantities generally produce lighter shades, while higher quantities may produce deeper colours. Ground madder may produce stronger colours than cut root.

If you have a particular shade in mind, start with a small sample. Keep notes of your quantities, water, mordant and temperature so you can return to a colour you like.

General guidance for dyeing with madder

Madder can be used with wool, silk, cotton, linen and other natural fibres, provided the fibre has been prepared and mordanted appropriately.

Begin by soaking the madder in water, preferably overnight. Cut root can be rinsed briefly with boiling water before soaking if you wish to reduce some of the yellow tones; discard the rinse water before extraction.

Extract the dye gently, keeping the temperature around 60–70°C (140–158°F). Higher temperatures can shift the colour towards darker, browner tones, particularly when the dye bath is held at a simmer or boil.

Strain the dye bath through a fine cloth or use a dye bag if you prefer to remove most of the root particles before adding your fibre. Ground madder produces more sediment, so take extra care when straining or using it on wool fibres. Alternatively, leave the dye material in the bath for contact dyeing.

Add thoroughly wetted, prepared fibre and maintain a gentle temperature for approximately one to two hours. Allow the fibre to cool in the bath and, where practical, leave it to rest overnight before rinsing. Wash gently with a suitable textile detergent.

Madder can also be used in cold-dyeing methods, which require longer processing times. Results will vary according to the fibre, mordant, water and dyeing conditions, so small test samples are recommended.

About this material

This madder is wild-harvested in Eastern Europe and supplied as dried root. As with other botanical materials, natural variation in appearance and dye strength is to be expected.

Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
