Tending Through the Season: Learning to Observe

One of the most challenging parts of growing dye plants is that there is no single formula that works every year.

The weather changes. The soil changes. Different varieties behave differently. What worked perfectly one season may need adjusting the next.

This month's Garden Series session focused on exactly that reality.

Rather than following a structured presentation, we spent time discussing what is happening in our gardens right now. Participants shared experiences growing woad, weld and indigo in allotments, gardens, greenhouses and tunnels, creating a valuable exchange of observations from different growing conditions.

A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the importance of observation.

Is a plant curling its leaves because it is dry or is it responding to a particular variety characteristic? Does it need more fertility? More water? More time?

These questions rarely have simple answers. Learning to read plants is a skill developed through experience and attention.

We also explored practical topics including soil fertility, feeding strategies, greenhouse growing, seed saving, and ways of supporting healthy leaf growth through the peak growing season.

One participant shared experiences with home-saved seed, while others discussed successful approaches to improving fertility and supporting vigorous indigo growth. These practical conversations often provide some of the most valuable learning, connecting theory directly to real-world growing conditions.

As the season progresses, our focus shifts away from sowing and establishment and towards stewardship — maintaining healthy plants, encouraging strong growth, and preparing for future harvests.

Growing dye plants is about building a relationship with the plants themselves, learning to observe carefully, and responding thoughtfully to what each season brings.

If you like to join these conversations and would like to deepen your learning through ongoing discussion, peer support and live sessions, consider joining our full Academy membership for just €65 per year. You'll gain access to a growing community of natural dyers and dye plant growers who are learning together throughout the seasons.

Not quite ready to join? You're warmly invited to become part of our free community first, explore the conversations, and get a feel for the supportive learning environment we are building together.
