This edition of FANEEL has been dyed in-house at AppleOak FibreWorks in Co. Clare, Ireland, using our natural indigo mineral vat. Free from synthetic dyes and harsh chemicals, the colour is achieved through a slow, mindful process using plant-based indigo and small-batch dyeing techniques, creating a different kind of denim!

Our studio runs on a closed-loop, regenerative system. All water used in dyeing is collected via rainwater harvesting, and filtered through aquatic plants, gravel, and a final woodland filtration zone before returning to the environment. Worm composting is used to enrich the soil that grows our dye plants—closing the loop between land, water, and colour.

AppleOak FibreWorks
Located in Co. Clare, Ireland, AppleOak FibreWorks is a natural dye and textile studio dedicated to ecological craft. We grow most of our dye plants, hand-dye textiles, yarns and clothing in small batches, and work with heritage fibres. Our production is low-impact, transparent, and rooted in place—driven by rain, soil, and slow process.

Our Weaving Partners
This fabric is handwoven in Nepal from wild-harvested Girardinia diversifolia (Himalayan nettle). The fibre is softened using traditional wood ash baths, beaten on stone, and spun by hand. The weaving supports fair wages and home-based work, particularly for women and rural families.

The Fabric

FANEEL has a straight weave and a structured feel. Naturally insulating and breathable, it softens beautifully with use. The hand-dyed indigo gives each piece subtle depth and variation.

History

Nettle fibre, in this case European nettle, has a long and rich history in Europe, once rivaling flax and hemp. Thomas Campbell, an 18th-century poet, wrote:

“I have slept in nettle sheets, and I have dined off a nettle tablecloth... The stalks of the old nettle are as good as flax for making cloth.”

FANEEL carries this tradition forward—with deep indigo, fair weaving, and a soil-to-cloth philosophy.

FINOLINA – Naturally Dyed European Linen Fabric

Finolina is our signature lightweight linen - refined, breathable, and radiant with natural colour. Woven in Italy from European-grown flax and hand-dyed by us in small batches here in Co. Clare, this fabric celebrates the tradition of natural dyeing with modern precision and care.

Available in three rich botanical shades:

💙 Medium Blue – classic indigo
💧 Light Indigo – soft, washed blue
🌿 Emerald Green – layered tones from indigo & pomegranate

Finolina has a cool, smooth hand and a gentle drape. Slightly narrower due to shrinkage in the dyeing process, it remains perfectly suited for garments and interior projects where natural beauty and material integrity matter.

The Fabric

Finolina is woven from 100% European flax, developed for us in a natural white and dyed entirely in-house using traditional indigo vats and plant-based extracts. This is a fine plain weave with a soft, structured touch—ideal for clothing and refined textile work.

Naturally dyed shades may show subtle variation, giving each fabric a unique, living quality - dyed in 5m lengths.

The Environment

Our Finolina dyes are made from plants—indigo, pomegranate, and other botanicals—using slow, non-toxic methods. We use rainwater harvesting, filtered water, and eco-conscious practices throughout our process. Linen itself is a sustainable fibre: low water use, zero waste, and 100% renewable.

Health & Comfort

Linen is breathable, naturally antibacterial, and kind to sensitive skin. Plant-dyed Finolina is free from synthetic chemicals, making it ideal for anyone seeking comfort and integrity in their textiles.

Care

Wash at 30°C with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid fabric softeners and optical brighteners. Dry flat or on a line while still damp. Colours may evolve gently with time, deepening the fabric’s story and softness.

Soft, airy and gently crinkled, this double‑layer gauze is coloured in small vats with traditional botanical dyes. The cloth has already “matured,” so the shades you see now are the shades that stay—just store finished pieces out of direct light.
