NETTLE SHAWL – LÁSA DEARG (Madder Red)

100% Nettle Fibre | Hand-knit in Nepal | Naturally Dyed in Co. Clare, Ireland

A Shawl Rooted in Place & Process

Our nettle shawl collection has been long in the making. High in the Himalayas, wild nettle is harvested, retted, hand-spun and hand-knit by artisans working with a fair-trade organisation (WFTO application in progress). Each piece supports rural families through fair income while preserving traditional handcraft skills passed down through generations.

Once finished, the undyed shawls travel directly to our dye studio in County Clare, where they are carefully scoured and coloured using rain-harvested water, slow cold-mordant methods, and pure botanical dyes. The process is gentle on fibre, low-energy, and entirely free from synthetic chemicals or heavy metals.

Dyed with madder root, Lása Dearg reveals a warm, earthy red — deep, vibrant, and alive with natural variation.

Colour Note

While the same recipe is followed for every batch, the natural beige-grey tones of nettle fibre and the living nature of madder root create subtle variations in shade.

Each shawl will be a close match to the photographed colour, yet never identical — every piece carries its own tone.

Why It’s Special

• 100% nettle fibre — wild-harvested, hand-spun and knitted by artisans in Nepal
• Fair-trade supply chain supporting remote Himalayan families
• Dyed in Co. Clare using rain-harvested water
• Natural mordants only — alum and iron acetate; no heavy metals
• Madder root yields rich, warm botanical reds
• Cold-mordant process — energy-efficient, non-toxic and fibre-friendly
• Closed-loop water system — rinse water filtered through gravel and reed beds to nourish woodland; dye solids composted in our wormery to feed new dye plants
• Naturally unique — subtle variation in tone and drape; softens beautifully with wear
• Printed care card included

Care

Hand wash cold with a pH-neutral soap. Rinse thoroughly, reshape gently and dry flat.
With wear, the nettle fibre becomes increasingly soft and fluid.

Wrap yourself in the warmth of Lása Dearg — a madder-dyed story of fair craft, clean colour and deep connection to the land.
