Sashiko Needles – Set of 3
Perfect your Sashiko stitching with this premium set of long, durable needles designed specifically for the traditional Japanese embroidery technique. Sashiko (刺し子), meaning "little stabs," is a time-honoured method used to mend, strengthen, and decorate fabric — originally practised by rural Japanese women using white thread on indigo-dyed cloth.
These steel needles are distinguished by their length and thickness, making it easier to load multiple stitches at once — a key feature of the Sashiko style. Whether you're mending, quilting, or embellishing, this set offers the right tools for smooth, precise stitching.
Set includes:
Material: Steel
Quantity: 3 needles (1 of each size)
Ideal for beginners and seasoned stitchers alike, this set is an essential addition to any visible mending or slow stitching kit.
A very simple tool to undo seams. A must when working with a sewing machine, at least for me! Made by clover, a simple straight forward tool.
An essential reference for choosing your felt colours with confidence.
This wool felt shade card includes samples fixed on 1 A4 sheet of heavy paper (2 sided). Each colour samples is approx. 2x2cm with colour code; for both dyed and undyed colours in the 1–1.2 mm wool felt range, allowing you to see and feel the material before committing to larger pieces.
As colours can vary between screens, the shade card provides a reliable way to assess tone, texture and thickness in natural light and within your own working environment.
• samples of dyed wool felt colours
• samples of undyed natural shades
• samples in 1–1.2 mm thickness

Fine Silk Fibre from Stretched Cocoons
Delicate, wafer-thin squares of mulberry silk known as silk hankies or mawata. These fibres are created by boiling whole silk cocoons and carefully stretching them over a frame to form fine layered silk sheets.
The result is an extremely light, strong and lustrous silk fibre that can be drafted directly from the hankie for spinning or used as a decorative fibre in felting and textile work.
Mulberry silk comes from the domesticated silk moth (Bombyx mori), which feeds exclusively on mulberry leaves. The silk fibres are exceptionally fine and smooth, producing yarns with beautiful shine and strength.
• Hand spinning (drafted directly from the hankie)
• Wet felting surface decoration
• Textile art and fibre crafts
• Silk paper and mixed media projects
When incorporated into wool during felting, silk hankies create beautiful sheen and delicate surface texture.
• 100% mulberry silk
• Silk hankies / mawata
• Fibre fineness approx. 10–13 microns
• Natural white colour
• Made from stretched silk cocoons
Hand wash finished items gently in lukewarm water and dry flat. Avoid strong agitation.

Síoda is one of the most luminous yarns in our range — combining softness, drape and the unmistakable sheen of silk.
Made from a balanced blend of mulberry silk and merino wool, this yarn offers strength, breathability, and exceptional comfort against the skin. The silk contributes its characteristic sheen and fluid drape, whilst merino wool provides elasticity, structure and warmth.
Soft and elegant, Síoda moves effortlessly on the needles and creates garments with gentle drape and quiet luxury.
The merino wool is sourced and processed in Peru. Mulberry silk from China is blended and spun with the wool in Peru to create the finished yarn. Each skein is then naturally dyed at AppleOak FibreWorks using traditional, sustainable natural dye methods and organic dye materials.
Natural dye colours develop beautifully on this fibre blend, creating rich tones with depth and subtle variation.

The Síoda Special Collection explores the full expressive potential of natural colour on silk.
Some blue colourways are dyed with natural indigo. A small amount of colour transfer to hands or needles during knitting is normal and temporary.
After finishing your garment, soak briefly in cool water with a dash of vinegar, rinse gently, and dry flat to help settle the dye.
With its luminous mulberry silk content and soft merino wool base, Síoda responds to natural dye in uniquely beautiful ways. Colours develop with depth, subtle sheen, and quiet variation, enhanced by the way silk reflects and absorbs light.
Each skein is individually dyed at AppleOak FibreWorks using traditional, sustainable natural dye methods and organic dye materials. These studio-dyed skeins are produced in small batches, allowing colour to develop organically through layered immersion and oxidation.
The result is a yarn of exceptional softness, luminosity, and individuality.
Soft, breathable, and refined, Síoda is especially suited to garments worn close to the skin and pieces where colour, drape, and fibre quality are central to the finished textile.

Chemical name: Sodium Carbonate (Na₂CO₃) | Grade: Textile | Use rate: 3–10%
No natural-dye studio is complete without soda ash (Soda in German). This alkaline powder (Na₂CO₃) raises the pH of dye baths and indigo vats, scours cellulose fibres such as cotton and linen, and brightens plant yellows like weld by increasing alkalinity.
💡 Note: Soda ash is milder than Potash (Potassium Carbonate), making it suitable for situations where a gentler pH adjustment is preferred. If you bought our 'Soda Ash' in the past, you would be looking for Potash, rather than this new Soda Ash listing.
• Boost pH in indigo, woad, or fructose vats
• Scour cotton, linen, hemp, and bamboo before mordanting
• Intensify weld yellow and other plant yellows
• Balance acidic dye baths when needed
• Material: Sodium carbonate (soda ash, Na₂CO₃)
• Function: pH enhancer & cellulose scour
• Dose: 30–100 g · L⁻¹ (3–10% owf) dissolved in hot water or dye liquor
• Compatibility: All natural dyes; indigo & woad vats
• Packaging: Resealable moisture-proof pouch
• Safety: Wear gloves & mask; store cool, dry, and away from acids
Dissolve the required soda ash in hot water (or directly into a hot dye bath) at 3–10%. Stir until clear, then add to the dye pot or fibre scour. For indigo vats, add soda ash after the pigment to adjust alkalinity before introducing a reducer.
Soda ash is strongly alkaline. Avoid inhaling dust and protect eyes and skin. Store sealed and dry; keep away from children and acids. Dispose of effluent according to local regulations.
💡 Tip: If you need a stronger pH adjuster, try our Potash (Potassium Carbonate K₂CO₃).
| Feature | Potash (Potassium Carbonate, K₂CO₃) | Soda Ash or Sodium Carbonate, (Na₂CO₃) |
|---|---|---|
| Alkalinity | Stronger | Milder |
| Best for | Indigo & woad vats needing a high pH | Controlled pH adjustment & cellulose scouring |
| Fibre use | Suitable for all natural fibres | Ideal for cellulose (cotton, linen, hemp) |
| Effect on dyes | Boosts colour strength (like weld) | Brightens plant yellows like weld |
| Traditional use | Historic indigo vat additive | General scouring & pH adjustments |
| Substitution | Can be used instead of soda ash for stronger alkalinity | Gentler option if potash is too strong |
Sodium Acetate ~ Used to turn Ferrous Sulfate into Ferrous Acetate; used in the Mordanting Recipe for Cotton and Linen without Tannin (see below)
Sodium acetate, NaCH₃COO, also abbreviated NaOAc, is the sodium salt of acetic acid. We use Sodium Acetate to turn Iron into an easier digestible version of itself, Iron acetate. Similar to 'Iron Water' but you can control the amounts. Iron acetate is not as harsh on the fibres and can be easier digested by nature or your septic tank when turned into rust. Once made, it has no shelf life and needs to be used immediately.
For mordanting Cellulose fibres, please choose one of the following recipes on our blog:
How to mordant linen and cotton fabrics successfully – AppleOak FibreWorks
How to mordant Linen and Cotton successfully without Tannins – AppleOak FibreWorks
---------------------------
Basic recipe:
1part Ferrous Sulfate
1part Sodium Acetate
Mix and dissolve in Water. I find that it makes the iron stronger and we only use 1% of Iron acetate on most recipes. Warm water will also intensify the reaction.
Source: Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis)
Solidago extract is a soluble natural dye derived from the flowering tops of Solidago canadensis, also known as Goldenrod. It produces soft, warm golden yellow hues with a slightly earthy tone and is suitable for use on both protein and cellulose fibres.
Ideal for immersion dyeing, textile printing, and ink or paint making, this extract is easy to use and lends itself to seasonal or layered colour work.
• Flavonoids (e.g. quercetin, kaempferol)
• Tannins
• Light Shades: 2–4% WOF
• Medium Shades: 5–8% WOF
• Rich Golds: 8–10% WOF (can be modified with iron or combined with tannins for olive shades)
• Natural Dyeing of Protein & Cellulose Fibres: Produces soft to deep golden yellow
• Textile Printing & Surface Design: Suitable for thickened dye paste systems
• Ink & Paint Making: Can be incorporated into water-based systems or used for lake pigment preparation
Solidago canadensis is a perennial flowering plant native to North America and widely naturalised in Europe. Traditionally harvested in late summer and early autumn, its flower heads yield warm golden tones prized in folk and botanical dye traditions.
Medium
This is a soluble dye extract, not a pigment. It dissolves fully in water and is suitable for immersion or surface application.

The Plant:
The Chinese sumac is a shrub ranging from 2 to 10m tall, native to northeastern India, China, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia. The galls are caused by the sting of an insect, usually a kind of wasp, on the leaves or bud. Sumac gallnuts are rich in hydrolysable tannins, particularly tannic acid.

Natural Colour Collection
Beautifully soft alpaca fibre prepared as a smooth combed top, available in eight natural alpaca shades.
This superfine alpaca fibre from Peru has been carefully combed so that only the softest fibres remain. Coarser guard hairs have been removed, leaving a luxurious fibre that drafts smoothly and produces wonderfully soft yarn.
Alpaca fibre is known for its lightweight warmth and silky softness. The fibres are naturally hollow, which gives spun yarn excellent insulation while remaining light and comfortable.
The fibre is offered in a range of natural alpaca colours, from light cream and fawn tones to warm browns and deep natural shades.
