Ramie is a beautiful plant fibre derived from the ramie nettle (Boehmeria nivea), a traditional textile plant used for thousands of years in Asia.

The fibre is naturally white with a silky lustre and shares many characteristics with flax/linen. Ramie fibres are extremely strong, highly absorbent and take dye beautifully.

Compared with flax, ramie is slightly coarser but ramie fibres are naturally very long and strong. After processing into roving the staple length is typically around 6–15 cm, making it suitable for spinning and fibre blending.

Hemp is one of the oldest textile fibres used by humans and comes from the stems of the Cannabis sativa plant. As a bast fibre, it shares characteristics with flax and ramie: strong, durable and naturally lustrous.

This hemp has been degummed, removing the natural plant gums so the fibre drafts more smoothly when spinning.

Tussah Silk Roving

Natural Tussah silk roving with a softly textured character and gentle natural sheen. Tussah silk is a wild silk fibre produced by oak-feeding silk moths, whose cocoons yield the naturally warm honey and ivory tones typical of this fibre.

Unlike mulberry silk, Tussah cocoons are often collected only after the moth has naturally emerged. Because of this, the silk is frequently referred to as “vegetarian silk.” The emergence of the moth breaks the continuous filament, resulting in a shorter staple fibre that is spun or prepared as roving.

Tussah silk is slightly less smooth and glossy than mulberry silk, but it brings beautiful character, warmth and natural sheen to yarns and fibre blends. The fibre is also lighter and fluffier to the touch, making it very pleasant to spin and blend.
