Natural Dyeing Course Module 1 Fibres & Textiles

Module 1 has been written and is almost finished. I still have to add the drawings, but I am delighted with the process. Now let me tell you what I will be covering in Module 1.

The structure of wool

  • Natural Fibres - what they are & their differences
  • Different Fibres & Textiles
  • Textile preparation for Dyeing & Printing

Understanding the behaviour of the fibre you are working with, is as important as knowing your plants. Module 1 will be covering exactly that.

  • Natural Fibres - what they are & their differences

We will be looking in detail at the differences of protein and cellulose fibres, how they are different and why they need different mordanting/dyeing techniques and why they behave the way they do.

  • Different Fibres & Textiles

One of the most interesting phenomena in natural dyeing is, that each fibre tends to take colour up differently. Not only between silk and wool, but also differently within each genre. Let's take the puzzlement out of this one and discover why. We will talk about Wool and other hair based fibres, Silk, Linen, Hemp, Cotton, Ramie, Nettle, Rayon etc.

  • Textile preparation for Dyeing & Printing

We are going right to the roots of each fibre and technique here and cover how to correctly wash, scour and wet out each fibre. From how to clean raw fleece, remove the sericin from Silk to how to prep your shop bought yarn/fabric/fibre.

The module will finish with a quiz and 1 project. There will also be a couple of Zoom meetings and support from the group and myself during the course.

Module 2 will cover everything there is to know and do about Mordanting
