Wool is usually sold per weight. But sometimes you want to know how long the wool roving is. We have calculated the roving length of the different packages below:
Please note that this is an approximation. The length can vary per type of wool, per colour or per production. And the harder you pull, the longer the roving becomes.
Would you want to make sure you get the wool roving in one piece?
We try our best to deliver the roving in one piece. But please count in that even when we try our best we don’t always succeed. Sometimes we have no choice but to deliver the desired quantity in two or more pieces.
Charcoal greys to light greys reveal themselves with Myrobalan dye! Also a great Tannin and therefore a mordant in itself especially for plant based fibres.

MYROBALAN EXTRACT ~ Tannin Mordant & Natural Dye
Myrobalan Extract, derived from the nuts of Terminalia chebula, is a rich source of natural tannins, including gallic and ellagic acid. Traditionally used in textile dyeing and printing, it enhances mordant fixation on cellulose fibers and produces shades ranging from light yellow to deep brown. Combined with iron, it is a key ingredient in creating grey and black tones.
Mordanting: Prepares cellulose and protein fibres for improved dye absorption.
Dyeing & Printing: Produces soft yellow to brown tones, deepening when used with alum or iron.
Versatile Applications: Used in tannery, ink preparation, and silk processing.
Chebulic Myrobalan grows across Asia and parts of Africa, prized for its tannin-rich fruits. It has been used for centuries in textile traditions, tannery, and even traditional medicine.
As a mordant for cellulose fibres: Use 10–20% of the weight of the fabric (WOF).
For light yellow tones: Use 5–10% WOF.
For deeper brown shades: Use 20–30% WOF.
When used with iron for greys and blacks: Start with 10–15% WOF of Myrobalan, then follow with an iron afterbath (1–3% WOF).
Dissolve the extract in hot water before adding it to the dye bath for best results.
For optimal results, use as a pre-mordant or in combination with iron for darker tones.

SUITABILITY
Over the past year, I have noticed that many crafters use natural dye kits to dye Cotton, linen and other plant based fibres. Unknown to them, the mordanting instructions used for Wool or Silk are unsuitable for plant based fibres and often will result in pale, short lasting colours.
We have remedied that with our collection of ever growing dye kits and stand alone dye recipes. You can now choose the dye kit according to your fibre need ~ protein (wool & other animal fibres) or plant based fibres (linen, hemp, cotton)
****************************
The DYE Kit makes a lovely present too - well packaged in recyclable cardboard, the dyes come in resealable stand up bags and the recipe is printed on strong booklet paper, which can be reused again and again.
What you will receive in this Kit:
Full and reusable Dyeing instructions
How to care for your plant dyed things care card
150g Mrobalan ground, 10g Iron ~ all packaged in resealable stand up bags
MYROBALAN CHEBULIC ~ a tannin used for (pre) mordanting cellulose (Cotton, Linen) Fibres. Recipe below.
ORIGN: India
Myrobalan is a very common tannin used in India and around Asia. It creates a plum-like fruit from various trees of the genus Terminalia, formerly used in medicine as a mild laxative and now used in the dyeing industry.
Myrobalan creates butter yellow on fabric, like most tannins. Tannin is important for mordanting cellulose fibres like cotton and linen. Alum alone is not a suitable mordant for cellulose fibres and its use will produce inferior colours.
Myrobalan can be used in print, over dye with indigo for teal, use as a stand alone colour or as a mordant.

Recipe Downloadable PDF for creating Greys and Charcoal
Basic recipe for mordanting cellulose fibres:
A 2 step process, please read through the entire instructions first.
Step 1:
Ingredients:
10% Myrobalan (10% of the weight of fabric (w.o.f.))
1.Fill a plastic or stainless steel vessel with hot water (40-50 d. Celsius/100-120F) to a 30:1 ratio (water : fabric)
2. add tannin and stir until dissolved or evenly distributed
3. add fabric, immerse fully for 1-2 hours. The bath will cool down, which is totally fine. Stir occasionally.
4. use rubber gloves when removing fabric, squeeze fabric. Rinse very lightly or better spin it out using a centrifugal spinner or washing machine. Tannin is bound to the fibre only by affinity and can be removed if rinsed aggressively.
5. save mordant for future use.
6. don't let it dry before moving to the 2nd mordanting step.
Step 2:
Ingredients:
Alum 12% (w.o.f.) Dissolved in enough boiling water, cool.
Soda Ash 1.5% (w.o.f.) Dissolve in enough boiling water, cool.
1. Combine the two solutions while stirring. It will bubble, so make sure your vessel is big enough.
2. Bubbles will subside quickly and you should be left with a clear liquid. Add additional hot water as described above. Follow steps 3 - 5 from above.
3. Rinse the textile well, to make sure any unattached mordant is rinsed off.
4. The textile may be dyed immediately or dried for future use.
Tips:
*Too hot and the tannin will oxidize, which is fine, if you want a potentially darker colour. For overdyeing, it is best to keep the colour as light as possible.
** You can also use cold water instead of hot, but it will require a 12h soak at least.
***Any tannin can be used with this recipe, but for lighter results use Oak Gall or Tara.
Enjoy!

100 % Natural Indigo | Origin: India | No synthetic additives
Harvested and processed in southern India, this true indigo powder delivers the deep, cool blues prized by dyers for centuries. Because indigo is an insoluble pigment (not a dye that bonds with a mordant), no mordant is required—just a reduced (oxygen-free) vat.
Why choose our indigo?
• Authentic & plant-based – Derived solely from Indigofera tinctoria leaves; never synthetic.
• Economical – ≈ 50 g colours 3–4 kg of wool to a strong mid-blue.
• Low-energy process – Vats work at 30 – 40 °C; no hard boiling.
• Versatile methods – Suitable for any indigo vat, be it fructose, mineral or bran-ferment vats, yeast vats, sig vats or quick hydros vats.
• Excellent colour-fastness – Outstanding on deeper shades, good on lighter blues.
Typical yield
• Pale sky blue – 1 g per 100 g fibre
• Medium denim – 5 g per 100 g fibre
• Deep navy – 12 g + per 100 g fibre (multiple dips)
Quick-start options
• Organic Sugar Vat – Indigo + lime + fructose (no fermentation wait).
• Yeast Fermentation Vat – Gentle, long-lasting; see recipe below.
• Hydros Vat – Fast one-hour reduction (includes chemical oxygen remover).
Yeast Vat Recipe (500 g fibre)
9 l water · 110 g sugar · 50 g preservative-free dried yeast
30 g bicarbonate of soda · 40 g indigo (ground)
• Maintain 40 °C (not above 50 °C).
• Reduce for 48 h until liquid turns yellow-green with a copper sheen.
• Dip pre-wetted, unmordanted fibre; oxidise 60 min; repeat for depth.
Storage & safety
Store in a cool, dry place, sealed against moisture. Wear a mask when handling fine pigment and gloves when working with lime, hydros or iron additives. Dispose of spent vats responsibly.

HAND SPUN NETTLE YARN
Available in Thin & Medium Weight | Colour: Natural Grey & Beige | Origin: Nepal
And then there was the humble Nettle, so often despised for its sting. Nonetheless, it is a treasure. It can be used like spinach, drank as a healing herbal tea, used for dyeing green and yellow, used in gardening as a pesticide, and last but not least, it creates fibre like flax...
Our hand-spun Himalayan Nettle Yarn is available in thin and medium weights, each offering unique qualities. The medium weight yarn is slightly uneven and can be stiff at times, while the thin yarn is smooth and even, making it ideal for clothing items. The yarn naturally varies in colour from grey to beige, creating a beautiful, rustic effect.
The Company:
Made from Himalayan Nettles, wild harvested in Nepal, this yarn is ethically produced by a company that supports homemakers, women, and families, providing them with a decent income and the opportunity to work from home rather than seeking employment abroad.
The Yarn:
Untreated and naturally processed with a combination of water and wood ash (lye), this yarn is hand-harvested and hand-spun in Nepal. The colour varies naturally from light grey/beige to brown. Available in hank form, this yarn is ethically produced and perfect for various crafts.
History:
Nettle yarn was once widely used in Europe and was known as the "Poor Man's Linen." Nettles once rivalled flax, hemp, and cotton as a staple fibre. Thomas Campbell, the 18th-century poet, famously wrote about the practical uses of nettles, from food to fabric. "I have eaten nettles, slept in nettle sheets, and dined off a nettle tablecloth," he said.
Use:
This yarn can be used for knitting, crochet, weaving, and sewing (thin yarn only). The medium yarn is semi-rough and not suitable for fine knitting or crochet work.
The Nettle Dress:
The nettle dress, handwoven using thin nettle yarn by Sofia C. in Sweden, showcases the versatility of this fibre. For more information about the dress, please email: wsm.shc@gmail.com.
In a Nutshell (100g):
Note:
Please get in touch if you prefer a centre-pulled ball instead of a skein. Medium comes in skeins, thin in ball form.
