How long is this roving?
Wool is usually sold per weight. But sometimes you want to know how long the wool roving is. We have calculated the roving length of the different packages below:
- 50 grams = approx. 2 meters
- 250 grams = about 10 meters
- 1 kilo = about 40 meters
- Bump of 4.5 kilos = approx. 180 meters
Please note that this is an approximation. The length can vary per type of wool, per colour or per production. And the harder you pull, the longer the roving becomes.
Would you want to make sure you get the wool roving in one piece?
We try our best to deliver the roving in one piece. But please count in that even when we try our best we don’t always succeed. Sometimes we have no choice but to deliver the desired quantity in two or more pieces.
Tussah Silk Warp
This tussah silk yarn, or better thread, is made from pure vegetarian silk, tussah silk. 6 fine silk threads have been twisted together to create a strong but fine thread. Intended to be used as warp yarn for looms, it can also be used for sewing or to add a special touch to your Fiber work.
In a nutshell for 100g natural tussah silk warp yarn:

6ply
Tussah silk (vegetarian silk)
only available on cones of 250g.
The silk warp is too fine to be made into a centre pulled balls unfortunately and are therefore only available in cone form.
TUSSAH SILK ~ undyed
Available in honey yellow and white (HONEY IS CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK)
Natural mulberry silk, also known as peace silk, shiny and beautiful. Ideal for spinning, felting & craft work. Mulberry silk is also known as cultivated silk or bombyx silk. Mulberry silk is finer, softer, stronger and has more lustre than Tussah silk, but it also kills the little worm inside, which doesn't happen in the production of Tussah Silk. It's 10-13 micron and is very white and perfect for dyeing. It will add extra texture and sheen to your felted project and your spun yarn when added to batts or fleece.
UNDER JERSEY ~ BASE MATERIAL FOR MAKING DOLLS
UNDER JERSEY FOR DOLL MAKING ~ De Witte Engel Quality. The best in our opinion!
Under Jersey is the base material for making dolls (like the popular Waldorf/Steiner Dolls). It is the first layer over the wool ball that forms the head.
Well known for making Steiner/Waldorf Dolls, this double knitted fabric is a pleasure to work with and a pleasure to cuddle! It is knitted in the round, creating a tube like fabric with no seams.
World Wide Recognized
De Witte Engel in-house Doll Jersey has gained worldwide recognition for its thick high quality, wide colour range as well as for its extra soft and smooth feel. Doll jersey as a material has specific requirements which make the manufacturing process more complex than normal jersey. Therefore, doll jersey has become a specialty product for only a few companies in the world.
Safe and EU regulations compliant
De Witte Engel Doll Jersey is made in Europe from ökotex certified, 100 % cotton yarns and is dyed according to European legislation code EN71 guidelines. These certificates proof that De Witte Engel Doll Jersey is natural, sustainable, and free from toxic and harmful substances and colourants, and especially safe to use in children’s toys.
Double knit Special Quality
The quality of De Witte Engel Doll Jersey is elevated by a double-knit technique. This technique makes our Doll Jersey thicker and more durable as it has two layers of knit together instead of one. This also means that when stretched, our Doll Jersey does not become see-through. These small but crucial steps make all the difference also for the final product the dolls. Even minor variations in the stretch or colour can affect the proportions, durability and life-likeness of the doll. Therefore, De Witte Engel 100 % cotton Doll Jersey is a reliable and consistent choice for crafters and doll makers in every corner of the world.

WALNUT SHELLS GROUND ~ discontinued
Dried (non-organic) Walnut Shells Ground ~ Dye Colour golden and dark Browns
*Walnut Shells powdered harvested in the wild of Macedonia
Walnut shells or husks are used for plant dyeing Wool and Silk. Preferably, you would like to use green Walnut husks, the dye colour brown is more radiant, but not everybody has a Walnut tree in the back garden, so try these dried shells instead.
IF you do have a tree handy, do collect the green husks and freeze them. You can use them as a dye without any need to fix the colour due to the tannin content.
If you use the dried husks, I would suggest to use a mordant, too. But do try without it, you might like the result!
Colourfastness: good
---------------
Basic recipe:
100% of Walnut shells
Wool (Mordant not necessary)
Soak the shells overnight
Simmer for 2 hours
Strain through cloth.
Add wool to the dye bath simmer for one hour.
Let it cool and leave in dye bath overnight.
Rinse and dry.

WELD (RESEDA) DYE
Reseda or Dyer's Weld is a Mediterranean herb and the oldest yellow dye plant in the world. Reseda alongside Madder, Woad and Chamomile produce the very best natural dyes for temperate areas. The famous medieval colours, Saxon green and Lincoln green, were produced by over-dyeing Reseda yellow with Woad blue. Lincoln green was apparently the colour of the clothing of Robin Hood's men.
Reseda is the base of many of our green yarns.
Colourfastness: excellent

Wheat Bran ~ fodder grade
Wheat Bran is an incredible simple by product of the bread making industry. We use it to remove guar gum from mordanted fabrics, improve water quality for dyeing and feeding our indigo fermentation vats.
Rule of thumb for dunging or guar gum removal: 10g/L
Please be aware that this is an agricultural product for animals and does not have the human consumption label.
WINTER FRUIT
Winter Fruit ~ single printed pattern**
As a child I took piano lessons from a teacher who kept a potted lemon tree in her home. The tree bore fruit in winter, and all through the cold months the surfaces of her living room were covered in crystal bowls full of lemons. As snow swirled outside and light streamed through the frosted windows, the citrus fruits glistened like baubles in the darkened living room - an improbable and delightful spectacle to accompany the sounds of the piano...
Intriguingly textured and cuddliciously warm, Winter Fruit is an anatomically shaped, reversible cowl. It is worked much like a top-down sweater yoke - only without the sweater! - making for a satisfyingly quick single-skein project.

WOAD 'BIRMINGHAM' SEEDS ~ grown to organic standards
WOAD BIRMINGHAM ~ grown to organic standards by us (not yet organically certified)
Growing dye plants gives you a feeling of connection to nature, that is unique and I am delighted that you are thinking of taking that step. There can never be enough growers on our Earth and I do believe that growing your own colour adds yet another dimension to gardening and the plant world as a whole. If you can keep it organic, do, the colours are richer and the flora and fauna will thank you for it, as do we. Enjoy!
Woad Birmingham is a little gem originating from Canada. We are always delighted to receive a new variant of Woad. Sent to us from a member of the Woad Project Facebook group. It has a few special characteristics: a crinkled leaf edge, strong waxy leaves and gives a beautiful blue green colour.
Woad has been used for centuries to obtain a blue dye. An attractive plant with 1m high stems, long succulent leaves, which shine like stained glass, with inner blue; foamy clusters and brilliant yellow flowers.
Woad is a biannual plant and the leaves are used for dyeing in the first year. Once the flowers have formed in the second year, the leaves only obtain very little dye and the second year is therefore only used for seed collection.
Sow: In Spring, late February to March in trays
Harvest: Leaves first year from early June
There is a Woad Group on Facebook if you like to have support and share your experiences, feel free to join :) The Woad Project | Facebook
