(Reseda luteola / Dyer’s Weld)
Bring a piece of Ireland’s dye heritage into your studio with our homegrown Weld! Grown in Co. Clare from our own carefully saved seed, we follow organic standards and sustainable practices throughout the growing process—though we are not organically certified (yet). Every plant is tended by hand, using eco-friendly, regenerative methods from seed to harvest.
We love closing the loop: spent dye plants from our studio are transformed through our worm composting system, returning as rich compost to nourish the next generation of Weld. It’s a full-circle, regenerative approach that brings even more life to our fields and colours to your work.
This listing is for dried Weld plants, shredded for your convenience. Stock is limited each year according to our small-scale approach.
Weld, or Dyer’s Reseda, is one of the oldest sources of brilliant, lightfast yellow for natural dyeing. From the Mediterranean to Irish fields, this plant has coloured textiles for thousands of years. Over-dye with indigo to create historic Saxon and Lincoln greens—the legendary colours of Robin Hood’s band!
We trialled our homegrown Irish Weld against both German Weld and our standard imported Weld, and the results were clear—our Irish-grown Weld produced the strongest, most vibrant colour of all. We’re delighted to share the best results from our fields with you!
Weld is the base for many of our favourite greens. The clear yellow it yields is prized for its clarity, vibrancy, and excellent colour fastness.
Grown in: Co. Clare, Ireland
From our own saved seed
Grown to organic standards (not certified)
Regeneratively grown using our own worm-composted dye matter

QUEBRACHO EXTRACT ~ Natural Tannin & Dye
Quebracho Extract, sourced from the bark of the Schinopsis tree, is a mild natural dye, rich in tannins. Traditionally used in textile dyeing, it enhances colour fixation on cellulose fibers, producing a range of warm, earthy hues from soft peach to reddish-brown. When combined with iron, it creates deeper, muted tones, making it perfect for creating nice, sustainable shades.
Uses & Benefits:
About the Plant:
Quebracho trees, native to South America, especially Argentina and Paraguay, are highly valued for their tannin-rich bark. Used for centuries in leather tanning, traditional dyeing, and natural medicine, Quebracho has a rich history in sustainable practices.
Recommended Usage for Dyeing:
Dissolve the extract in hot water before adding it to your dye bath for best results. For optimal colour retention and vibrancy, use Quebracho Extract as a pre-mordant or combine with other natural mordants.

Source: Schinopsis lorentzii (Quebracho Colorado)
Quebracho bark is a warm-toned, condensed tannin-rich material traditionally used in natural dyeing, leather tanning and fibre pre-treatment. We offer both cut bark and ground bark, each suitable for slow processes and earthy beige tones.
• Cut Bark: Ideal for decoctions and slow extractions
• Ground Bark: Finely milled for quicker infusion and stronger colour release
🌿 For those looking for faster solubility, our Quebracho Extract is available as a separate listing.
• Condensed tannins
• Flavonoids (including fisetin & dihydrofisetin)
Cut or Ground Bark
• 30–50% WOF (soaked overnight or simmered 1 hour)
Extract (sold separately, see link below)
• 5–15% WOF (dissolves directly in water)
• Natural Dyeing of Protein & Cellulose Fibres – beige
• Iron Modification – create grey, warm taupe or darker brown/beige shades
• Tannin Pre-treatment for Cellulose – use prior to mordanting
• Ink & Surface Design – ground bark can be brewed into concentrated liquids
Native to Argentina and Paraguay, Schinopsis lorentzii (Quebracho Colorado) is a dense hardwood whose bark yields powerful condensed tannins. A favourite among natural dyers for its earthy, iron-reactive shades and broad fibre compatibility.
Medium to High (especially with iron modifier)
• Cut Bark – coarse, for slow extractions and decoctions
• Ground Bark – finer, for quicker and deeper colour releases
• Powdered Extract (sold separately) – fast-dissolving, highly concentrated

RAMIE ROVING ~ Suitable for spinning, doll hair, dyeing, felting when mixed with wool
Ramie fibre, a nettle plant, is white with a silky lustre, similar to flax in absorbency and density but coarser (25-30 microns). One of the strongest natural fibres, it has low elasticity and dyes easily. Strands of ramie range up to 190 cm in length. Great for spinning, dying and other fiber arts including doll hair. This fiber can be dyed using natural or commercial dyes (Fiber reactive are best) even hair dye can be used (though I don't have any personal experience with that one).
Vegan friendly
*orders of more than one piece will be cut in one continuous length unless instructed otherwise *

SUITABILITY
Over the past year, I have noticed that many crafters use natural dye kits to dye Cotton, linen and other plant based fibres. Unknown to them, the mordanting instructions used for Wool or Silk are unsuitable for plant based fibres and often will result in pale, short lasting colours.
We have remedied that with our collection of ever growing dye kits and stand alone dye recipes. You can now choose the dye kit according to your fibre need ~ protein (wool & other animal fibres) or plant based fibres (linen, hemp, cotton)

The DYE Kit makes a lovely present too - well packaged in recyclable cardboard, the dyes come in resealable stand up bags and the recipe is printed on strong booklet paper, which can be reused again and again.

Dye Colour: Yellow Brown, Green (with Iron), Pink (with Soda Ash) – pH and Mordant Dependent | Country of Collection: China
Rhubarb root is a captivating natural dye, producing a spectrum of colours that vary depending on the pH of the dye bath and the mordant used. Known as a Quinone dye, it is rich in tannins, which yield earthy yellow-brown and green hues with iron. A higher pH will shift the colour to delicate pinks or reds, though these tones are less colourfast. Notably, the yellow and green shades are more stable, maintaining their colour for longer.
Colour Fastness:
pH Sensitivity: High pH will shift the colour to red.

All fibers align in the same direction and the roving has a regular thickness, making it an easy wool to knit with.
Wool is usually sold per weight. But sometimes you want to know how long the wool roving is. We have calculated the roving length of the different packages below:
Please note that this is an approximation. The length can vary per type of wool, per colour or per production. And the harder you pull, the longer the roving becomes.
Would you want to make sure you get the wool roving in one piece?
We try our best to deliver the roving in one piece. But please count in that even when we try our best we don’t always succeed. Sometimes we have no choice but to deliver the desired quantity in two or more pieces.
