Our nettle shawls begin high in the Himalayas, where wild nettle is harvested, retted, hand-spun and hand-knit by artisans working with a fair-trade organisation (WFTO application in progress). Each piece supports remote families through fair income and the preservation of traditional craft.

Finished shawls travel directly to our dye house in County Clare, where they are carefully scoured and coloured in small batches of five using rain-harvested water, cold-mordant methods, and a botanical blend of natural homegrown indigo and myrobalan.

This combination creates Lása Glas — a fresh, pine green that softens beautifully with every wear.

Sewing Notes

Because Piuma is a fine single jersey, it can show a gentle twist after washing. Always reshape while damp and dry flat to maintain alignment.
Use a jersey or ballpoint needle and a fine stretch stitch; for tubular work, cut open the fabric if a flat layout is preferred.

Care

Merino wool refreshes naturally with air. When washing is needed, hand-wash cold with a mild wool detergent.
Do not wring; reshape gently and dry flat.
Avoid bleach, tumble drying or high heat. A soft brush and overnight airing restore freshness and fluff.

Whole Pomegranate Flowers are a natural dye source that yields a lovely yellow colour, perfect for dyeing wool and silk. Collected from the wild in India, these flowers provide a deeper yellow hue depending on the quantity used. Though pomegranate flowers are a beautiful option for natural dyeing, their colour fastness is poor, meaning the vibrant yellow tones may fade over time. Pomegranate flowers are versatile and can also be used in soap making or consumed, adding a natural element to your crafting or culinary creations.

Colour Fastness: Poor

Colour Outcomes by WOF Ratio:

• 100% WOF Dye (Pomegranate Flowers): Produces a yellow colour.
• Use of higher quantities for deeper yellow or orange tones.

Basic Recipe for Yellow:

Ingredients:

• 100g Wool or Silk (mordanted with 10% Alum for 1 hour)
• 50-100g Whole Pomegranate Flowers

Instructions:

1. Soak the Pomegranate Flowers overnight in water.
2. Strain the mixture through a cloth, tie off the flowers (dye bag), and place in the dye bath.
3. Simmer the mordanted wool or silk for 1 hour.
4. Leave the fibre in the dye bath to cool (this will deepen the colour).
5. Rinse the dyed fibre and allow to dry.

POMEGRANATE PEELS ~ CUT & GROUND ORGANIC ~ can be used as Tannin and as yellow dye

The pomegranate is a fruit-bearing deciduous shrub in the family Lythraceae, subfamily Punicoideae, that grows between 5 and 10 m tall. The pomegranate originated in the region extending from Iran to northern India and has been cultivated since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean region.

 Colourfastness: good - excellent

If you are using protein fibres, a simple 10%Alum bath will do for mordanting, but protein fibres can also be dyed without a mordant when using Pomegranate peel due to its tannin content.

Once mordanted:

Add 100% pomegranate peel to 80degrees Celcius Water for one hour. (100% of the dry Weight of your Fibre/Fabric) If using powder, stir regularly or it will burn the bottom of your pan.

After an hour, switch of the heat and add the fabric/fibre. Leave to up to 3 days, until desired depth of colour. 

Wash, rinse, dry.

 Pomegranate Powder can also be used as a tannin and for printing when combined with Alum and Guar Gum.

POTASH – pH ADJUSTER & SCOURING AGENT

Chemical name: Potassium Carbonate (K₂CO₃) | Grade: Textile | Use rate: 3–10%

No natural-dye studio is complete without potash (Pottasche in German). This alkaline powder (K₂CO₃) is slightly stronger than soda ash and is traditionally used to raise the pH of dye baths and indigo vats, scour cellulose fibres, and intensify plant yellows such as weld by increasing alkalinity.

💡 Note: This product was previously listed as Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate). We have updated the listing to Potash (Potassium Carbonate) to reflect the correct material.

Uses

• Boost pH in indigo, woad, or fructose vats
• Add to your scouring bath
• Intensify weld yellow and other plant yellows
• Balance acidic dye baths when needed

In a nutshell

• Material: Potash (Potassium Carbonate K₂CO₃)
• Function: pH enhancer & cellulose scour
• Dose: 30–100 g · L⁻¹ (3–10% owf) dissolved in hot water or dye liquor
• Compatibility: All natural dyes; indigo & woad vats

Basic directions

Dissolve the required potash in hot water (or directly into a hot dye bath) at 3–10%. Stir until clear, then add to the dye pot or fibre scour. For indigo vats, add potash after the pigment to adjust alkalinity before introducing a reducer.

Safety & storage

Potash is strongly alkaline. Avoid inhaling dust and protect eyes and skin. Store sealed and dry; keep away from children and acids. Dispose of effluent according to local regulations.
